About the Class
For many individuals, finding a first job is challenging. For individuals on the autism spectrum, that challenge can be significantly greater due to barriers such as interview anxiety, abstract expectations, and limited access to hands-on learning opportunities.
This program was developed to address those challenges by teaching university-level concepts in a fun, approachable, and hands-on way. The curriculum focuses on 3D printing, modeling, collaboration, and small-business fundamentals, with an emphasis on real-world application and skill-building.
Drawing from academic coursework and professional design frameworks, the program is intentionally structured to balance creativity, technical learning, collaboration, and practical outcomes. It is designed to help neurodiverse students build confidence, practice real-life collaboration, and create meaningful projects aligned with their interests.
What Students Do:
Phase 1: Introduction & First 3D Print
Students are introduced to 3D printing and explore the wide range of objects that can be created, including fidget tools, signs, models, and functional items. Students learn the basics of 3D printers and how to print existing online models.
Phase 2: InFUSE Toy City Center & Fundraiser
Students move into original design and collaboration by contributing to a shared “toy city” project. This phase introduces early entrepreneurship concepts as students design, produce, and sell their creations. Because each piece must function as part of a cohesive set, students practice collaboration, planning, scaling designs, and systems-level thinking.
Phase 3: Final Personal Project
Students receive individualized support to apply 3D printing to a personal interest. Projects may include meaningful personal creations or exploration of 3D printing as a potential small business, Etsy shop, or maker-market opportunity.
