Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder and Vestibular Sensory Processing

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects the way adolescents communicate, react, and behave with one another. Common symptoms include having trouble expressing thoughts and having a decreased sense of awareness. This tends to interfere with vestibular sensory processing which is essential to balance and coordination. Being self-aware and adjusting to different environments is integral, especially when growing and adapting to different circumstances. Without proper vestibular sensory processing, these characteristics can become delayed, and individuals may experience poor motor coordination. Dance therapy is seen as an efficient intervention to improve vestibular sensory processing and regulate arousal.

How Dance Therapy Improves Sensory Processing

Dance therapy is a calm and structured method in which individuals can express themselves through movement. Due to the fact that it improves self-awareness, it is beneficial for teenagers with ASD, many of whom may struggle with distractions such as bright lights or loud noises. Research supports that sensory processing difficulties in ASD are connected to discrepancies in brain development. More specifically, individuals with stronger neural connections in certain brain regions respond differently to stimuli—some adapting better in social settings and others having better sensory reactions.

Dance therapy integrates the brain’s neuroplastic nature to enable adolescents to improve their sensory reactivity and social interaction. This is because dancing activates different sensory systems such as the proprioceptive system through positions and the auditory system through music. Doing movements like spinning or balancing while paying attention to the music stimulates the vestibular system, which leads to improved physical coordination. Additionally, dancing in group settings encourages individuals to make eye contact, which is a social skill. Therefore, people who undergo dance therapy are better with daily interactions and activities since the body is consciously adapting to different sensory inputs.

Emotional Benefits of Dance Therapy

Furthermore, emotional awareness is also improved through this intervention, which is important since many individuals on the spectrum have problems with verbally communicating their feelings. Dance allows them to capture the nuances of their thoughts within each movement. This can be stress-relieving for teens with ASD, who often face increased social challenges. Furthermore, this therapy allows them to find self-confidence and challenge the stereotypes that underestimate their capabilities.

Conclusion

Overall, dance therapy offers an effective approach to improving vestibular sensory processing in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. It also provides a safe environment where participants can connect with not only others but also themselves.
